Technology Industry Experts: Matt Carey

Matt Carey, Product Development Manager, SunGard Availability Services

As Product Development Manager for SunGard Availability Services, Matt is a key contributor in shaping the company’s strategic product roadmap and is responsible for the management and execution of new product development initiatives.  As part of the virtualization task force, Matt is on the front lines evaluating, testing and implementing new virtualization technologies, helping tie together fundamental technology, people and process elements to help ensure SunGard is offering the high levels of availability customers are demanding.

With more than 10 years of experience in the technology sector including the managed services, telecommunications and software industries, Matt has held a range of positions including management consulting and strategic planning, in addition to product management and development.  Prior to joining SunGard, Matt lead the effort to define and develop voice, network, security, web/e-commerce and hosting product sets for a leading regional ISP, through the company’s transition to an Integrated Communications and Managed Service Provider.

Matt received his B.A. in Economics and Psychology from Dickinson College and his MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Delaware.

Commentary:

It’s an exciting time in IT – many are calling virtualization a “game-changing” technology – but what we see at SunGard is the uncoupling of hardware from the solution itself – almost a return to the past when mainframes ruled the enterprise.  This shift represents great opportunity for cost savings and efficiency, but it’s not something to be approached blindly.  It’s important companies carefully evaluate how virtualization will work for their specific environment and to work with experts to review what IT infrastructure changes may have a ripple effect on business processes, business continuity plans and general levels of availability.
